Hyperpigmentation

Let’s get one thing straight: Uneven skin is completely normal, and discolorations and skin irregularities can happen for various reasons, e.g. due to scarring and excess sun exposure. However, if you find your hyperpigmentation bothering you, know that there’re ways to reduce the patches and prevent them from worsening – so, let’s investigate.

A routine tailored for hyperpigmentations

A smooth, even skin tone is only a couple of products away with our routine tailored for treating and preventing hyperpigmentation (we listed the products in the ideal order for your routine):

Daily Foaming Cleanser: Keep your skin fresh and clean with 100% natural cleansing actives and the soothing properties of this wonderful daily cleanser.

Skin Perfector 2% BHA: Resurfacing exfoliant that helps prevents breakouts, smooth wrinkles and bumpy texture, and brighten uneven skin tones for a flawless finish.

Niacinamide Lifting Mist: Elevate your routine with this facial mist enriched with the multipurpose ingredient niacinamide that counteracts irritations and is known to soothe redness, increase the skin’s fatty acid level, and, like vitamin A, protect against hyperpigmentation.

Vitamin A Treatment Cream/Daily Hydra Cream: What moisturizer you choose should depend on your remaining routine. Are you new to both vitamin A and BHA? Then we recommend that you start by using one of the products (either Skin Perfector 2% BHA or Vitamin A Treatment Cream). Once your skin has gotten used to one product, you can slowly introduce the other. If you e.g. start with BHA, you should stick to a regular moisturizer, such as our Daily Hydra Cream containing replenishing hyaluronic acid.

Intense Peel Mask: Add this peeling mask to your weekly routines for rejuvenating effects that’ll leave immediate and long-term results on your skin.

Facial Sunscreen SPF50: Always, always, always end off your routine with SPF, but especially if you have hyperpigmentations, to prevent the UV-rays from worsening the symptoms.

OBS: If you haven’t used vitamin A before, we advise you to start by using it 2-3 times a week and then gradually increase your use to once every day as tolerated. We guarantee results worth the wait!

What is hyperpigmentation?

Let’s break it down: Hyper means more, and pigment means color. Hyperpigmentation therefore describes when some areas of the skin appear darker than others. These patches can vary in size and color, whereas some are brown or black and others pink and red. Meanwhile, some experience it in small spots and others on their whole body. The common cause of hyperpigmentation is an overproduction of melanin, a natural pigment that provides the skin with color. This overproduction can be triggered by various factors, whereas the most prominent ones are known to be sun exposure, hormonal changes, aging, and skin injuries/inflammation. There therefore also exists different types of hyperpigmentation, with the most common ones being sunspots (AKA liver spots, caused by sun exposure), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (a result of injury or inflammation, mostly as a result of acne), and melasma (believed to be caused by hormonal fluctuations).

How do I treat hyperpigmentation?

Though we can control how much we expose our skin to UV rays and how we treat our skin, we can’t control our hyperpigmentation completely. While some turn to more intense treatments, there’re ingredients and remedies that can help minimize the appearance of your hyperpigmentation and help even out your skin tone – from your vanity.

Go-to ingredients for hyperpigmentation

So, how do you protect and care for your skin the best, when it comes to hyperpigmentation? We’ve gathered some ingredients and treatments that can make the whole difference for your skin: A chemical peel: These types of treatments contain strong acids that, depending on the product, will offer concentrated care by removing the utmost layer of dead skin, thereby enhancing a smooth and healthy surface. Incorporating a peel in your weekly routines can therefore be highly beneficial, if you wish to diminish discolorations and uneven tones. Retinoids are other ingredients that help promote an even skin tone. Derived from vitamin A, retinoids penetrate on a deep cellular level to increase cell turnover and target hyperpigmentation. An essential ingredient for your product collection, if you wish to counteract skin irregularities. Vitamin C: With brightening properties, vitamin C works deep within the skin to even out skin tones and enhance an even-looking appearance. This ingredient also holds strong antioxidant abilities that helps it protect against UV damage. Sun protection: SPF and staying in the shadow is generally the way to go if you want to prevent sunspots.
