Skincare acids

Acids. The word itself can be intimidating enough for some people to not dare go near them – let alone apply them to their faces. But there're actually lots of good reasons why you shouldn't dodge products that mention acids in their ingredient list. We gathered some of our favorite acids and the reasons our skincare routines wouldn't be the same without them.

The power of acids

Many types of acids serve as actives in skincare products. Actives target specific skin concerns and have proven effects in treating issues such as dryness, signs of premature aging, and eczema — in other words, actives can change your skin for the better. It's all about choosing the right acid for your skin type and its needs.

Hyaluronic acid

Suitable for: All skin types

This skin-replenishing ingredient immediately boosts the skin's moisture content and elasticity. It's especially known for its hydrating and soothing properties as well as its ability to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Despite its name, this substance actually isn't considered an acid due to its low pH level and lack of exfoliating properties. Still, it's a worshipped ingredient for its numerous benefits.

How to incorporate acids into your routine

As with many other things in the skincare universe, you should never jump into acids full force. It's important to give your skin a chance to react to the effects. Begin using your acid-enriched product 1-2 times a week, and be aware that products containing lots of actives can cause a reaction of temporary redness to the skin — this is completely normal and only shows that the ingredients are working. The most important thing is ultimately to note how your skin responds.
