Should i switch up my routine for autumn?

Autumn routine

Let’s talk autumn-friendly skincare. Should you implement a new product, or does your routine maybe even need a complete switch-up? Is autumn-friendly skincare even a thing?

We answered some of the questions that tend to pop up as the leaves begin to turn brown.

How autumn affects our skin

In many places, autumn equals harsh wind, low humidity, and dropping temperatures. Most often, this change will disturb the skin’s moisture balance, leading to a dull appearance and dry feel. If not treated correctly, the skin can also react to moisture loss with inflammations, flakiness, and eczema.

Luckily, there’re ways to combat the negative effects that autumn can bring upon our skin. The best way to do this is to know what parts of your routine benefit your skin and which ones that need to be tweaked a little to fit the change of season. So, let’s dive into that.

Should I quit exfoliating?

The short answer is no, but the most important thing will forever and always be that you listen to your skin and its needs. As mentioned, with autumn can follow a build-up of dead skin cells, and a deep-cleansing and exfoliation can be an effective way to get your skin back to a glowy appearance, as it’ll reveal a new and fresh surface.

Actually, the colder season is the ideal time to exfoliate your skin. As a general rule, combining sun and exfoliating is a big no-go, as the skin can turn very sensitive after an exfoliating treatment, especially to UV rays.

Does cleansing harm my skin?

First things first: We’d never advise you to stop cleansing. Cleansing is what helps remove oil, pollution, and other types of unwanted debris, and is therefore an essential step in every skincare routine – all year round.

Switching to a natural and nourishing cleanser – maybe even an oil-based one, depending on your skin’s level of dryness – is a great way to make sure you’re not stripping your skin and disturbing its balance while keeping it fresh and clean during the colder months.

Do I need more moisture in my routine?

It can be hard to determine whether your skin is calling for more moisture or not, but moisture should never be left out of your routine completely. If you’re generally dealing with oily skin and impurities, we’d advise you to not boost the moisture content in your rituals but to stick to what works for you (and yes, oily skin needs moisture too).

If you do however feel your skin drying out with the seasonal change, richer products may be the way to overcome it. Opt for a richer cream and apply a moisturizing mask 1-2 times a week to keep your skin’s moisture content balanced.

PRO TIP: If you apply a facial oil as the last step of your PM routine, you’ll not only provide your skin with nourishing moisture, but also seal in all the hydration from the other products. Did somebody say smooth and supple skin?

How do I protect my skin and prevent autumn-related issues?

Most skin-related issues stem from an imbalance within the skin. Meaning, the only way to combat these issues is to get your skin’s balance back on track. So, how do we do this?

Probiotic skincare is products that not only work to ensure a beautiful and healthy surface, but also strong skin that can defend itself from internal and external stressors.

Actibiome is a key ingredient in probiotic skincare, as it helps strengthen and balance the skin’s microbiome and barrier, making it able to fend off the issues before they get to develop on the skin. You can find this enriching ingredient in every single woods_ moisturizer, which all possess repairing and restoring properties aside from their hydrating benefits.

So, should I switch up my routine for autumn?

The thing is that it’s not a yes or no question. It all depends on your individual skin tone, the way your skin responds to certain products and the change of weather. While some experience a huge difference in their skin when autumn comes around, others barely notice it. If you’re one of those people whose skin doesn’t beg for anything out of your ordinary routine, we recommend just sticking to what works – don’t try to fix what isn’t broken.

If you do however feel that your skin needs a helping hand during autumn, try implementing our tips into your routine – these small approaches might be what make the whole difference.
