But what is combined skin, and how do you cater for your skin, if it has different demands? We set out to answer these questions and others in this blogpost – because skincare shouldn’t be complicated, even if your skin type is combined.
What is combined skin?
Combined skin, also referred to as combination skin, is a skin type, meaning that it’s genetic – however, its condition can be affected by other factors, such as hormonal fluctuations or environmental elements like the weather or pollution exposure.
If your skin is combined, you’ll experience that some areas of your skin, like your T-zone, are oily, while others, typically your cheeks, will be more on the dry side. Both reactions occur as a response to an imbalance in your skin’s natura oil production.
Unfortunately, many experience catering correctly for combined skin to be a challenge, because on one side, you’d like to avoid dry and flaky skin, but on the other side, you don’t want to provoke impurities on the already oiled areas. Therefore, it’s about finding a middle ground with products that both treat your current condition while working to stabilize your oil production – and we're here to assist you in doing so.
Gentle and rebalancing ingredients are key
Frankly, the skincare universe can be quite a jungle. Navigating through myths, misleading information, empty promises, confusing marketing, and actual evidence-based research can be hard to manage – especially if you’re new to this field.
However, one piece of advice remains crucial: If you want to find products that will make an actual difference for your skin, the answer is in the ingredient list, as the magic unfolds within the formula. But if your skin is combined, should you then focus on targeting impurities or dryness? Actually, that’s not even a decision you have to make. In the following, we’ve gathered some essential routine steps and ingredients that will help you obtain the results you desire while caring for all parts of your complexion.
During the day, our skin collects various amounts of dirt, pollution, not to mention bacteria that can irritate the skin or clog pores. And just think about how many times we touch our face in just an hour. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that a daily cleanse is pivotal to prevent the effects from settling on your skin. Generally, it’s recommended that you stick to cleansing your skin once a day, so you avoid disturbing its natural oil production. Furthermore, it’s always a good idea to avoid harsh sulphates (SLS/SLES) – especially if you have a tendency to dry skin. On ingredient lists, these will be referred to as sodium laureth sulphate and sodium lauryl sulphate. The best alternative to these is natural cleansing actives, which will keep the skin fresh and clean without leaving the tight feeling, many of us, unfortunately, experience when using stripping ingredients.
Our Daily Foaming Cleanser is composed of calming, hydrating ingredients as well as 100% natural cleansing actives derived from coconut that gently remove build-up and bacteria. Because clean skin is happy skin – and no routine is complete without a nourishing cleanser.
Taking a step further, enriching your rituals with a weekly or daily exfoliator can help address and counteract impurities, as this type of treatment effectively decongests clogged pores while lifting away dead skin cells. For example, our daily exfoliator Skin Perfector 2% BHA is the perfect match for oily and breakout-prone skin types. Thanks to the addition of the key ingredient salicylic acid (BHA), which chemically exfoliates the skin to remove toxins, dirt, and impurities, the product promotes an even skin texture while counteracting both existing and potential impurities.
And yes, all skin needs a moisturizer – it’s “simply” about choosing the right one (which is, granted, sometimes easier said than done). Unfortunately, many falsely believe that skin with excess oil doesn’t need any more moisture – but the truth is actually quite the contrary. Rather, a nourishing moisturizer can help stabilize the skin’s oil production and, thereby, help prevent the over production of oil. Our Daily Hydra Cream contains a lightweight formula, which quickly penetrates the skin with replenishing hyaluronic acid and actibiome; an intelligent composition of different components that actively restores the skin’s pH and natural defense, so that the skin is left more balanced and resilient towards damage.
