What ages your skin... Besides aging?

WHAT AGES YOUR SKIN... BESIDES AGING?

While skin aging is both beautiful and inevitable, we’d prefer for it to happen due to its main, natural reason: aging. But did you know that various factors in your day-to-day life can contribute to accelerating the aging process in your skin, resulting in premature signs of aging?

Now, what can this mean for your skin? In reality, there’s no definite answer, as premature signs of aging can show up on the skin in various ways, like skin discoloration, sensitivity, loss of elasticity leading to a decrease in plump- and smoothness, texture changes, as well as wrinkles, and fine lines. Luckily, there’re ways to keep your skin smooth, vital and silky-soft – and protected. It’s all about knowing the triggers. In this blogpost, we'll dive into some of the factors that induce aging signs on the skin before its time and how to counteract them. The most important remedy? Prevention. In other words: Keeping the effects from ever settling on your skin. So, without further ado: It’s time to unmask the culprits.

Sun Exposure

Sun exposure will always be our number one suspect when it comes to determining the reason behind premature signs of aging. Actually, UV radiation is one of the known primary causes, as it leads to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers in the skin – which are important components that provide elasticity in the skin, helping to keep it firm, bouncy, and smooth.

But we’re not here to spoil your beach adventures. The sun also has multiple benefits for us, so we’d never want to promote a bad conscience for catching some rays. All we’re saying is that you’re doing your skin a (huge) favor when popping on a sun hat, sunglasses, and, of course, protecting your skin with SPF while absorbing some well-deserved vitamin D (and yes, this tip is equally as important during winter). So, if you haven’t tried woods_ sunscreens, this is your sign! Infused with antioxidants, vitamins, and calming aloe vera – not to mention broad spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays to make the indulgence full circle.

… Oh, and we’d always recommend staying out of direct sun between 12 and 3 PM, as the sun is the strongest in this time range. Trust us, it will make a difference.

Environmental pollutants

They really are good for nothing, huh? Truth is, our skin is exposed to harmful pollutants probably every single day. Besides leading to general skin damage and inflammation, pollution can degrade collagen and elastin in the skin, causing premature aging signs like the formation of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.

Preventing premature signs of aging caused by pollution involves a combination of protective measures and a consistent skincare routine. In short, barrier protection, antioxidant skincare, hydration, and SPF should be top of mind (and your skin).

Unhealthy lifestyle choices

Look, we aren't perfect ourselves. Who doesn’t love indulging yourself with chocolate, fast food, or a nice drink? We know we do. But our skin… not so much (unfortunately).

Nutrients, vitamins, omega fatty acids – the list goes on. They’re all beneficial on so many parameters, including for our skin. Try to eat balanced and make sure your body and skin gets all the components it needs and deserves to stay strong, healthy, and resilient. And remember: A balanced diet doesn’t mean exclusion of the things you love – moderation is key. Truly, it’s all about habits, and habits can take time to turn around.

And speaking of habits… as you might know, smoking is a known cause of accelerating the skin’s aging process, as the toxins in tobacco can affect the skin’s blood flow, thereby decreasing moisture and breaking down collagen and elastin, ultimately leading to wrinkles. So, we hope that it comes as no surprise why we couldn’t finish this list without mentioning this culprit. And we know quitting is tough, but if you needed another reason to do so, you got it.

And let’s just throw a *very* important side note in here: Your genetics can play a role in your skin’s appearance and development – also when it comes to aging signs. So, if your skin isn’t acting the way you’d like it to, don’t be too quick to blame yourself. Instead, use your energy on looking into preventative and treating measures that can help you achieve the results you desire (like the ones we’ll go through below).

Preventive & treating measures

We’ve now gone through some of the primary offenders responsible for premature signs of aging.
