Why cleansing your skin is key: Step by step

cleansing skin

When you think about it, clean, healthy, and nourished skin might be the best accessory you can wear. From in-depth cleansing to nourished and energized skin – nothing beats the feeling of a daily foaming cleanser. A good cleanser is key and fundamental since it provides the ultimate conditions for healthy skin.

STEP #1: Keep it clear – Cleanse your skin

We highly recommend this to get implemented in your skincare routine, even if it’s the last thing you want to do after a long day. Cleansing and washing your face literally mean removing all dirt, oils from e.g. makeup, and especially environmental pollutants/impurities and viruses collected on the skin throughout the day – those are the main benefits. But it also means giving your skin the best conditions and ability to absorb, regenerate, and heal itself much better and quicker.

Sooo, what if I don’t cleanse? You might ask. Sebaceous glands are tiny, tiny glands that produce an oily substance called sebum to protect and keep the skin healthy. The tiny glands are connected to the hair follicles within the skin, where they use the follicles as a pathway... – are you still with me? Okay, hold on – we’re almost there…

The pathway allows the oil to reach the skins surface (outer layer) to form a barrier that prevents the admission of bacteria or other harmful elements. Thus, without a regular cleansing or washing, your skin builds up excessive layers of dirt, grease, and grime that eventually block the hair follicles, making it difficult for the protective sebum to form a barrier. The lack of sebum production leaves the skin exposed to bacteria and inflammation.

In other words? Remember to wash that dirt off before bedtime, kids.

STEP #2: Build a strong barrier

The skin has three layers; stratum corneum, epidermis, and dermis. The skin’s barrier is located in the outermost layer of epidermis – when you cleanse your skin, this is the part you nurture and strengthen. The skin barrier is also known as the moisture barrier as it helps the skin retain moisture. Thus, the skin barrier is an important and necessary guard for the remaining layers and plays a crucial role in keeping away dirt, excess oils, and bacteria – as well as various skin problems, such as dryness, breakouts, and rosacea. When the barrier is healthy and intact, the skin also becomes more efficient in retaining essential moistures.

How can you tell if your skin barrier is damaged? When you notice signs of dryness, redness, inflammation, dehydration, itchiness, or massive pimple formation, it is a sure sign of a damaged skin barrier. This is due to a lack of the protective sebum layer but could also be because of aging. As we get older, the skin slowly loses its ability to absorb and retain moisture.

Using a daily skincare routine is an effective way to help strengthen and protect the skin barrier, which ultimately might lead to more resilient, healthy-looking skin. Using a good cleanser that helps maintain this is therefore a step in the right direction. Below are a few tips to which and what you should look for.

STEP #3: Get foaming - Know what to look for

The first step towards healthy, hydrated skin (besides drinking plenty of water)? A good cleanser. That’s it. Everything starts with clean skin – that’s no secret. Right from which product you choose to how your makeup looks throughout the day. With literally hundreds and hundreds of to choose from, we give you a few tips, so you know what to look for, when you are on the hunt for skin cleansing products.

Clean skin - the natural way

If you're dealing with sensitive and/or dry skin that easily gets irritated, an oil-based moisturizer might be exactly what you've been missing on your radar. When choosing your cleanser, we always recommend that you opt for natural ingredients, as these won't disturb the skin's natural balance and environment. Our oil-based and ultra-nourishing Cleansing Balm is an especially ideal choice for dry and sensitive skin types, as it's 100% natural and vitamin-infused to effectively remove make-up, dirt, as well as excess sebum and SPF without drying out the skin.

Use it as the first step in a thorough double cleansing routine or as a cleanser in itself for perfectly cleansed and nourished skin.

Being gentle is key

Know your skin type and how it reacts – and look for a cleanser that matches this. Start your morning with a mild and highly effective foaming cleanser that soothes and refreshes your skin. Our Daily Foaming Cleanser is scientifically developed with a strong focus on natural ingredients and actives to provide your skin with the best conditions for a healthy and strong barrier. A simple press on the pump transforms the gentle soap into soft foam. Damp your skin and divide the foam by massaging gently with circular movements, then finally rinse with lukewarm water. Depending on your skin type, Daily Foaming Cleanser can easily be employed on an everyday basis.

pH level on point

pH level is the measure of whether a substance is an acid (below 7) or a base (above 7). Selecting a cleanser with a balanced pH level will help maintain your skin’s neutral balance. Thanks to new innovative formulations, we’ve filled our cleanser with water-rich organic cucumber; rich in antioxidants, aloe vera; packed with cleansing and clearing nutrients and vitamin C; for boosting radiance and diminishing signs of aging. Regardless of your skin type, our Daily Foaming Cleanser and Cleansing Balm are the perfect non-irritating cleansers that activate, hydrate, and nurture in depth right away – without drying out the skin or stripping it of its natural oils. The skin is left soft and radiant – and better able to absorb your additional moisturizers.

Back to basics

Good skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. If you follow the previous steps above, you’re well on your way. The purpose of a cleanser is to surround, loosen, and help with an easy removal of dirt and oils. After cleansing, before moisturizing – what comes on your skin hereafter is just as important as the cleanser.  Energizing and super nourishing, a serum is the perfect tool for targeting specific skincare worries like wrinkles, pigmentation, solar damage etc. Using a serum after a cleanse is ideal as its microscopic molecules easily penetrate the skin directly and improve the skin’s appearance – goodbye fine lines, hello skin tightness. Give your skin extra love with our cleansers and serum. Discover them here
